Mission Statement

The Information Security Office supports the mission of UT Dallas by building a culture of security awareness and risk management to protect the confidentiality, integrity, availability, and accountability of information assets.

The Information Security Office serves as partner and educator. Risk mitigation is achieved through awareness training, technology solutions, inclusion of security controls in new projects, and regulatory compliance.

Intro to the Department

The Information Security Office is a team of professionals who promote an environment where the mission of UT Dallas can be fulfilled without disruption or unnecessary risk. We have a motto, “Education – Partnership – Solutions,” which defines our values when serving our customers across campus.

  • Education represents a commitment to share our perspective about emerging information security risks. The modern Internet-connected world offers amazing value and convenience but also introduces new opportunities for criminals to steal information. When we recommend changes that could be disruptive to part of UT Dallas operations, we strive to inform those affected in advance and educate them about “why” we are concerned and see opportunities to adjust security.
  • Partnership represents our desire to strengthen relationships across campus. We believe more can be achieved when teams work toward a shared goal. For example, we participate in the evaluation of new vendors and test the security of new software, before decisions are finalized or websites go live on the Internet. This allows for greater safety and reliability, built-in from the beginning when it is less expensive and less disruptive.
  • Solutions represents our approach to building appropriate security around information assets, considering both technology and the impact on people. When we face a new security challenge, our first answer is not “No,” but rather we ask, “How?”. We create conversations so risks can be measured against rewards and reasonable decisions can then be made.

The Information Security Office will continue to evolve to meet the needs of UT Dallas in a rapidly-changing world where information is at risk, yet critical to our daily lives.

Just a few of the initiatives we have underway include building cooperative relationships across campus, delivering security awareness training to more stakeholders, implementing comprehensive patch management and vulnerability reduction procedures, encrypting computers and mobile devices that could be lost or stolen, ensuring reliable systems to support NetID and logon to vendor applications, building security into new projects early in the planning phase, and maintaining regulatory compliance.
