Chemistry Computer Laboratory
Microcomputer Center 3rd Floor McDermott (or BE 3.412)
There is a substantial number of computer-aided lessons
available to help you learn the material in this course. We
encourage you to take advantage of them. You will not be graded
on these lessons. They are for your benefit. There will be
questions on each exam covering material from the computer
lessons. In past years, students who made A' s in the course
also had completed the computer lessons. Let that correlation
not be lost on you.
The chemistry computer laboratory is located across from the
check-in desk in the Micro Center, 3rd floor of McDermott
Library. You need to secure a UTD account from the attendant at
that desk if you haven't already done so. After getting an
account, you can either work in the Micro Center or in BE 3.412.
As you sit down at a computer, check to see if the computer,
monitor, and video player are on. If not, turn them on. Follow
the instructions carefully.
1. Log on to the PLUTO network by typing your name as it
appears on your account. (Pluto gives you access to many
applications besides the Chemistry ones; for example, you
can send and receive e-mail, surf the WWW for
wwwpub.utdallas.edu/~parr, etc.)
2. Type your own password. (If you use it, infoserv e-mail
challenges you with this again.)
3. Go through the following series of menus striking the Enter
key after highlighting each selection using either the gray
arrow keys or a mouse click:
"DOS Applications"
"School/College Specific Menus"
"Chemistry"
"CCC"
4. You should now have a ricocheting message that says "press
a key to begin" (If this is on the screen when you come
in, the student before you forgot to logout. Logout
first!)
5. Type in the class name as chm1341.
(Those are numerals "one" not letter "L".)
6. Type your last name and first initial (no space between)
for your name; I'd be parrc.
7. Type another password (your social security number or
whatever you can remember).
8. Then you should have a menu of lessons available for your
choosing (with those you've already done checked off for
you). Always log off the network when you're done!
