Organization of CHEMISTRY 1341

Summer 1996
Lecture Section 011

Instructor:

Dr. Chris Parr, BE 3.506, 883-2485, parr@utdallas.edu

Teaching Assistants:

Mr. Darren Lee, BE 3.306, darrenl@utdallas.edu
Ms. Lin Li, BE 3.402 llin@utdallas.edu

Text:

Atoms, Molecules, and Reactions: An Introduction to Chemistry by Gillespie, Eaton, Humphreys and Robinson

Prerequisite:

One year of high school is assumed. In consequence, the first chapter of the Gillespie text will not be covered in the regular class period, but it will be tested in quizzes and on exams! Some of you may not remember (or fewer still were not exposed to) that material. A self-graded quiz over Chapter 1 will be given during our first meeting. The results of that quiz may suggest that you take advantage of remedial coverage of that chapter I will offer between 6/11 and 6/13 the hour before our regular lecture.

Grading

           3 hour Exams at 20% each 60%
		Comprehensive Final Exam 20%
		Quizzes 15%
		Attendance 5%

Letter Grade:

100...A...90...B+...85...B...80...C+...75...C...70...D+...65...D...60...F

Homework:

Homework problems will be assigned every week and collected every week but will not be graded. However, there will be a quiz every Friday (last 15 minutes of class time) on the homework assignment. Solutions to the homework are already posted here on the Web.

Exams:

All exams must be taken at the scheduled time (see calendar) during class hours. Failure to take any Lecture exam or Quiz will result in a "zero"(0) for that activity. There will be no make-up exams for those not taken. Instead, the final exam grade may be substituted for the lowest hour exam.

Attendance:

Your attendance and class participation will have an impact on your final grade. Students are encouraged to attend all classes and laboratories. Not only will poor attendance jeopardize the 5% of your grade as noted above but it must also be reported to the Associate Provost and may have an impact on Scholarship retention.

In addition to the lectures and the text, students may avail themselves of a computer tutorial on the material of this first semester.
