GRADING AND HOMEWORK POLICY

Grading:
Homework Policy:
  1. NO LATE HOMEWORK! Homework will be considered late at 10:00 AM the day after it is due, and will not be graded without a valid excuse.
  2. Make your solutions as clear and neat as possible.
  3. Follow the instructions given in the problem.
  4. Staple your homework. If homework is not stapled, points will be deducted and neither the TA nor the instructor will be responsible if pages get lost.
  5. No spiral notebook pages will be accepted.
  6. Number your questions. The assigned order is preferred.
  7. Pencil is preferred. If you use pen, please use only one side of the paper.
  8. Units are required thoughout your solution (if applicable).
  9. Box or somehow otherwise clearly mark your final answer.
  10. Computer-drawn graphics with no work or explanation will receive no credit.
  11. All involved in copying will receive no credit for the problem in question. Yes, we can detect copying.
  12. Your homework should include all valid or required steps so that you or someone else could follow your method for a similar question. Some measures to achieve this:
    1. Label equations taken from the text.
    2. List all given data and what you are looking for.
    3. List formulas to be combined or used before you start algebraic manipulations.
    4. Make numerical substitutions only at the end, if required.
    5. Define all variables you use.
    6. Explain what you are doing.
    7. Document your code.
    8. A correct solution must be such that the TA can follow it or full credit will not be given.
    Doing a good job on homework benfits everyone. You'll do better on the tests, and your homework scores will be higher. If you believe that a problem has been graded incorrectly or unfairly, then please see the TA.

EXAMINATIONS

Midterm exam: Monday, July 7, 1997, during regular class hours. The exam will be open-book, open-notes, open-homework. No calculators will be allowed. All calculations must be done by hand, with all work shown, in order to receive full credit. The exam will cover the topics assigned as homework through Monday, June 30.
Final exam: Monday, August 11, 1997, 6:00-9:00 PM. The exam will be open-book, open-notes, open-homework. No calculators will be allowed. All calculations must be done by hand, with all work shown, in order to receive full credit. The exam will be comprehensive.
